Sorry guys, this was supposed to be yesterday but it was one of those weeks…

Let’s take a wander through the tomato patch. 

We received quite a few really interesting tomatoes through the seed swap and then Seeds of Imbolc had so many delicious varieties I wanted to try so it was hard narrowing them all down. As usual, it’s all about the heart’s desire fighting with the actual room. 

1.Kryptonite Cherry Tomato

I believe that this tomato comes from Wild Boar Farms. 

Why did I Choose it?

Seed swap

Uses?

Anywhere you would use a cherry tomato. I’m interested in eating these fresh for the most part but if we have a large harvest we’ll put some in the Balsamic Cherry Tomato Caramelized Onion Conserve from SB Canning. It is so delicious!

Specifics:

Kryptonite is a truly exotic-looking tomato that blends the deep blue of anthocyanin with green and yellow flecks and striping. As its appearance may imply it is appropriately tangy in taste. As with other varieties with anthocyanin the fruit are extra durable and has an extended shelf life and average 2-4 oz. Kryptonite is quite productive, and the plants are indeterminate. They have semi-late maturation cycle and grow on the shorter side; averaging about 3-5 feet in height. It is also not uncommon for the leaves to be somewhat curly.

If you look up pictures of these guys they are gorgeous! I’m super excited to grow them.

2. Chocolate Pear Cherry Tomato

Why did I Choose it?

While going through Seeds of Imbolc’s tomatoes it looked and sounded so good we had to try it. 

Uses?

Apparently it packs a big tomato taste into a cherry tomato. 

Specifics:

Expect huge crops of simply gorgeous “black,” pear-shaped tomatoes over a very long season. Chocolate Pear has the rich tomato flavor that has made heirlooms so popular! A great variety for CSAs and market growers. Red, overlaid with swirls of varying hues of green or brown. Very unusual and decidedly one of the best! Delicious and gorgeous!

3. Velvet Red Cherry Tomato

From SSE member Joe Bratka of Elmwood, New Jersey (aka Angora Super Sweet - Winner of the 2009 Tomato Tasting at SSE’s Heritage Farm). 

Why did I Choose it?

Looked amazing in Seeds of Imbolc’s list. A velvet tomato? Why not!

Uses?

Cherry tomato eating, cooking, canning, preserving, drying etc.

Specifics:

Striking silvery gray dusty miller-type foliage. Heavy yields of 1″ cherry tomatoes, excellent sweet flavor.

The ‘Velvet Red Tomato’ is almost too bizarre to be real, the leaves of this extraordinary heirloom plant being a fuzzy silvery gray colour, and the skins of these scrumptious, supersweet little red cherry tomatoes are velvety! This is not only an ornamental plant, though, as the fruit is absolutely delicious. This spectacular novelty tomato, a great selection for a patio garden, grown from these rare seeds, might be the most beautiful ornamental vegetable you will ever grow and is guaranteed to turn heads! "

Personal Notes: 

I’m really excited about the foliage on this one. Pretty and delicious are what a potager is all about.
